Note to self: don’t swear at speed cameras (after German driver receives whopper of a fine!)
There’s an old wives’ tale about the German Autobahn, maybe you’ve heard it.
They say you can’t get done for speeding.
Of course, as much as one might wish this idea to be true, well, it's not. In reality, it’s a total misconception that Germany’s highways are completely lacking in speed limits.
And just this month, a BMW driver learned the hard way that you can, in fact, receive a fine for speeding on German motorways.
Unfortunately for him, he also didn’t realise how much that fine could escalate as a result of his own rude behaviour.

The 26-year old driver was caught speeding just 7mph above the 44pmh (70km/h) limit on this particular stretch of the Autobahn.
Any other day, he wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at the perfectly reasonable €20 penalty.
Only thing is, on this day, he happened to stick his middle finger up at the speed camera as he sped on by. You know, as you do. (Don’t worry, I don’t!)
As you can imagine, the local police force didn’t particularly appreciate the driver flipping the bird in their direction. So they filed charges.
And the District Court? They whacked up the fine by 75 times as much and threw in a month’s driving ban for good measure.
The phrase “just deserts” comes to mind.
Whether he’ll think again having paid his €1,500 fine and completed his ban is another question. But who cares? It’s a hilarious story.
