Will this potential deterrent for number plate offences actually work?

Most people have their own choice word to describe those inconsiderate drivers who fly down your road at twice the speed limit.

Mine begins with “T”.

And unsurprisingly, there’s a correlation between the antisocial driving and number plate offences.

You know the sort of thing, where the number plate’s obscured or there’s a digit missing. It dupes speed cameras and means you can get away with pretty much anything.

Don’t go getting any ideas now.

But if parliament accepts a newly proposed bill, there could be more of a deterrent to doing the dirty this way.

Currently, you’d only receive a £100 fine for obscuring your number plate. But under the proposed changes, you’d land yourself 3 points on your licence too.

So if you got caught speeding with a dodgy number plate, you could get hit with 6 points altogether.

A recent investigation by Auto Express found that it’s super easy to buy cloned or incorrectly spaced number plates from online traders. Which suggests that there are plenty of people out there making the most of the number plate loophole.

But do you think these proposed changes are tough enough?!

If there aren’t more police on the roads to catch drivers with illegal plates in action, how can we dole out the extra points anyway?

I’d love to see this problem solved, but I’m not sure points is going to be the answer here.
