Ironic Tesla crash serves as important reminder for drivers

We're usually big fans of irony here at DM.

Love a bit of slapstick, the classic “don’t slip on the ice” yelled by the falling on-screen auntie, limbs flying everywhere.

But when the joke involves death by dangerous driving? Not so funny.

When Elon Musk told the world in January that Tesla would make record profits from self-driving software this year, this was the last thing he’d have wanted.

He was “highly confident” his cars would be driving themselves with reliability “in excess of human” this year, after all.

Tesla’s well known for marketing its vehicles as “full self-driving”, suggesting the cars are autonomous and already capable of being driven, err, driverless.

But less than three months after Musk’s big statements, two men have died by crashing a Tesla into a tree in Texas.

With no-one in the driver’s seat.  

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that this incident serves as a useful reminder that Teslas are not currently capable of full self-driving, and I beg you never let anyone hop out of the driver’s seat in any Tesla you’re sitting in!
