The first electric vehicles – concept or futuristic?

Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t anything new.

In fact, the first electric cars hit the market in the 1970s…

And one has just resurfaced!

Incredibly, the Electrek Uncar had a window defroster that was, well, a hairdryer.

With new internal combustion engine vehicles stopping production from 2030, the shift towards EVs is gathering some serious momentum.

But back in the 1970s, EVs were more of a futuristic concept than a serious alternative to petrol cars.

These original electric cars have gathered somewhat of a cult following online, and occasionally they pop up for sale.

And the Electrek Uncar looks like it’s straight out of Ghostbusters. It’s so bad that it’s almost good.

The unfortunate reality is that most of these 1970s concept EVs are chronically underpowered.

And by that, I mean that the engine has all the horsepower of a lawnmower. And it looks like a microwave.

They weren’t exactly popular either – generous estimates state that they sold 50 of them in total.

But hey, everything has to start somewhere, and maybe the Electrek Uncar walked so that the Tesla could run?
