Fines set to increase on London’s red routes?
An increase in the maximum fine on London's red routes has been proposed by Transport for London (TfL).
The routes make up London’s busiest roads, with just 5% of roads carrying up to 30% of the city’s traffic.
Under the proposals, the maximum fine for offences would increase from £130 to £160.
The figure hasn’t increased since 2011, and consultation is set to close on the suggestions in a few weeks.

TfL insists that a higher fine would be an effective deterrent and help to keep the roads safe, with the main offences including:
- Parking illegally in loading bays
- Parking in bays outside of permitted hours
- Blocking yellow box junctions
- Driving in bus lanes
- Turning left or right when not permitted to
The maximum fine could increase to £160 or £80 if it’s paid within 14 days.
It’s essential that drivers are aware of the red route rules in London, as well as any potential changes, to help improve safety on the roads.
The red routes coupled with London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) are designed to improve traffic levels, safety, and air quality in the capital.
Clean air zones are being introduced across the UK, with Manchester, Birmingham, and Bath all committing to various levels of charging zones to reduce NO2 levels and meet net-zero targets.
How do the plans affect you? And will the push for more clean air zones make you consider electric vehicles for your fleet?
