New road safety campaign launched
The government has launched a new road safety campaign aimed at keeping those most at risk safe.
The ‘Travel Like You Know Them’ campaign aims to promote positive driver behaviour to protect those not in vehicles who are at the highest risk.
That includes:
- Pedestrians
- Cyclists
- Horse riders
It follows changes to the Highway Code earlier this year that saw the introduction of ‘risk-based hierarchy’.
This changes the responsibility of drivers to put the onus on motor vehicle drivers to give precedence to vulnerable road users.
Drivers should leave at least 1.5 metres of space when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, as well as giving them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.
Priority should be given to vulnerable road users when turning into or exiting a road at a junction, which is a key change for ALL road users to be aware of.

The Travel Like You Know Them campaign aims to promote equality on the road by promoting better behaviour by drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists on the roads.
The changes to the Highway Code include clarification on cycle positioning, who has priority at junctions, what constitutes a safe passing distance, and what safe speeds are while overtaking.
