100 Amphibious Cars, One Canal And A Swansong…

Amsterdam is a city famous for a lot of things, not least its canals.

This year, Netherlands’ capital played host to the annual Amphibious Car Parade that moves countries each year.

But despite 100 amphibious vehicles taking to Amsterdam’s canals for the eye-catching event, it might be the last time we see it for a while…

And it’s all down to new rules that restrict the city’s waterways to emission-free vehicles from 2025.

But because of the sheer weight of the electric batteries on amphibious cars, it might be a while before we see the glorious sight of amphibious cars floating on down Amsterdam’s canals.

Things might change once technology develops and electric batteries for vehicles become lighter but for now, it looks like amphibious vehicles might be taking a hiatus from some European cities due to emissions measures.

Given the volume of traffic on many of Europe’s waterways, it begs the question as to whether similar restrictions as we’ve seen introduced on roads through clean air zones will be implemented on rivers, lakes, and canals.

The good news is that the event was well attended and the cars will still be able to take to the water in plenty of other cities (for now!).

In fact, the new rules are specific to Amsterdam, meaning that amphibious vehicles are still free to take a dip in the rest of the Netherlands.

Phew.
