AI Cameras Are Behind The Rise In Speeding Fine Numbers…
The rollout of AI Cameras in recent years is a big factor behind the rise in the number of speeding fines being issues, according to recent data.
A freedom of information (FOI) request found that five of the UK’s 35 police forces have already introduced AI cameras in recent years, with two more set to roll them out this year.
It comes as 3.3 million Notices of Intended Prosecution (NIP) were issued in 2024, which has risen from 2.9 million two years prior.
A NIP is issued before a fine and the Department for Transport (DfT) and police forces are working together to automate as much of the process as possible to reduce the strain on the police and act as a deterrent for drivers.
It’s not just speeding that AI technology is being used for by police and authorities, though.
In a bid to improve road safety, AI cameras are being used to detect drivers who are not wearing a seatbelt or who are using a phone behind the wheel.
With the burden on the physical presence of police to catch offenders, there has been a concerted effort to look to alternative methods of spotting those breaking the law while driving.
AI Cameras are able to take full images of the inside of vehicles, as well as determining the make and model, making it easier to issue automatic fines or offer awareness courses as an alternative where appropriate.
