Dazzling Isn’t Quite What We’re Aiming For…

One topic that’s constantly in the news right now is headlights… and their strength.
That’s because research has found that more and more drivers are reporting problems with headlight glare in oncoming vehicles late at night.
As we head into the winter months, it’s a valid concern – and there’s even going to be a proper investigation.
After all, ‘dazzling’ shouldn’t be a setting on headlights given the safety implications…
The Department for Transport (DfT) has commissioned the investigation which will measure the intensity levels experienced by drivers during night time journeys.
It’s something that experts and drivers have been calling for in recent years and it appears that it might lead to action in the coming years.
The research will be looking at the real-world implications of headlight glare, which includes exploring the impact that different weather and road conditions have on visibility.
With so many vehicles coming equipped with automated light settings, the need for drivers to manually adjust settings has decreased.
But that also means that as the strength and effectiveness of LED lights increases, there might need to be tighter regulation on the brightness, angles and intensity of headlights.
The idea is for the government to conduct the research and take it into discussions with regulators, manufacturers and industry bodies to come to a general consensus.
Do you think headlights are too bright on vehicles today? Have you experienced issues with dazzling lights in oncoming vehicles? Let us know…
