It’s Got A CD Player, Player, Player…

Once upon a time, cars came fully equipped with tape decks.

When they were phased out, in came CD players and all was right with the world…

Then came streaming and the need for the CD player in cars was gone.

Or so we thought.

Because despite the last new vehicles equipped with CD players leaving the production lines many moons ago, millions of drivers still use CDs while driving.

In fact, 15% of adults listen to CDs in their cars, which adds up to about 7 million drivers.

It goes without saying that CD sales have dropped off dramatically from the days where HMV ruled supreme, and we all headed out to buy our favourite band’s new album.

From a high of 170 million sales in 2004, just 11.4 million CDs were sold in 2023 – but with Spotify and Apple Music ruling the scene, there’s little need for CDs anymore, right?

Well, apparently not – Taylor Swift sold 172,000 CDs while other artists also found some success in the compact disc format.

So maybe it’s time for CD players to make a comeback in new vehicles… or maybe even a tape deck for the nostalgia?

It did get me thinking about things we used to have in cars that aren’t around anymore and whether there’s anything worth bringing back – let us know if you’ve got any ideas…
