Government Confirms Digital Driving Licence Rollout This Year

The government has confirmed that UK drivers will be given the choice of using a digital driving licence later this year.

It’s long been mooted but official confirmation of the plans was announced by the government this week, with one of the driving forces being the use of driving licences as ID when buying age restricted items, as well as proving their right to drive.

Under the plans, a mobile driving licence will be one of the first digital documents able to be stored in a new Gov.uk wallet which is set to launch in 2025.

With the trend of secure digital wallets for debit and credit cards, tickets and a variety of other uses, the government is keen to modernise driving licences.

The good news is that it doesn’t mean it’s the end for physical driving licences, with the digital licence being option and in addition to the traditional licence.

Security is one reason given for the move but there are practical applications for fleets too, with the ability to check driving licences against the digital version.

Other forms of ID and government documents are set to follow as the government follows the trend of everything going digital – which we’re all more than familiar with!
