Leather Seats, Cruise Control And A Bottle Of Ketchup

Modern vehicles come equipped with pretty much everything you can think of.
Front and rear heated windscreens, heated seats, keyless entry, remote start – there’s little that you can’t get in cars, vans, HGVs and any vehicle these days.
So, the natural next step is… condiments?
Well, there’s a bit more to it than Volkswagen just deciding that they’d branch out into ketchup.

It’s a little-known secret that Volkswagen makes its own currywurst sausages, a homage to their roots in Wolfsburg.
Produced at their plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, they’re sold in restaurants and at football grounds across the country, as well as being given to Volkswagen customers.
In fact, they actually produce more sausages than cars, with 7 million per year being made.
The big news is that their ketchup was made available in the USA for the first time and sold out its first batch before you could say ‘currywurst’.
It’s a sideline that’s turned into an incredibly successful brand exercise AND a product that’s successful in its own right.
Perhaps other manufacturers could follow suit and get into their own condiment sidelines…
I’m thinking of Volvo mayonnaise, Vauxhall brown sauce, Citroen mustard and maybe even Ford hot sauce.
If you’ve managed to get your hands on the famous Volkswagen ketchup or if you’ve tried one of their sausage, I’d love to know…
