As the nursery rhyme goes, Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus…

And in a remarkable turn of events, that appears to be exactly what happened in Montana in the US.

Yes, a circus elephant was having a bath and getting ready for a show in the evening when a car backfired.

That spooked the large Asian elephant, who then fled the scene and found herself in the middle of a busy street in the city.

Luckily, she’d decided to stop rather than cause any further damage after heading through a rickety fence to arrive on the four-lane road.

I’ll admit, I’m not sure I’d believe someone if they told me they were running late because an elephant was blocking the road – but that’s probably why everyone had their mobile phones out filming!

Workers and handlers from the circus headed over to the scene with a trailer which had another elephant in it.

They popped the ramp down and she wandered straight in – no wrangling needed!

It might be the most harmless animal breaking free incident I’ve heard of, which is remarkable given the sheer size of the elephant. 

Then again, I’m still not sure I’d fancy my car’s chances if it came face-to-face with an Asian elephant.
