HM Revenue & Customs case study

Driving Monitor has been instrumental in helping us effectively manage our fleet of commercial & Grey Fleet drivers.
Their expertise in advanced driver training has helped us reduce our risks significantly.

Possibly the largest contract for on-road driver training, the Inland Revenue is committed to providing all of its car drivers with the focused training they need to drive safely. Stan Ayling – whose responsibilities as Head of Commercial Operations for the Inland Revenue (includes Transport & Travel) said,

“We have a very proactive approach to fleet safety and have provided fleet driver training to them for some years. We are now looking to add to this by providing interactive driving training courses for staff that manage our pool cars on a daily basis. Driving Monitor have the experience and background to offer the right fleet driver training for us to move further forward with this project.”

Key Benefits of Driving Monitor for HM Revenue & Customs:
  • Accident monitoring & in-vehicle training help us proactively reduce risk.
  • Centralised driver data allows a clear view of risk reductions.
  • Line manager visibility has driven compliance rates higher across the board.
  • Seamless onboarding & lifetime monitoring ensure risk is managed continuously.

Initially, the project focused on assessing all drivers using the Risk Monitor online driver risk assessment system. This allowed HM Revenue to gain a clear view of all driver risks under a single, unified platform. Since then, the system has evolved to handle much of the day-to-day operational management, streamlining risk assessments and drastically reducing the administrative burden required to maintain compliance.

One of the most impactful improvements has been the reduction of driver risks, particularly among our Grey Fleet drivers—employees who use their personal vehicles for business purposes. Driving Monitor’s platform not only automates compliance checks for tax, insurance, and MOT status but also provides targeted in-vehicle driver training to address specific risk factors. This combination has eliminated previous challenges in monitoring Grey Fleet compliance and has significantly enhanced driver safety. As a result, we now have a clear, accurate overview of compliance, ensuring every driver meets both legal and safety standards.

Our partnership with Driving Monitor continues to evolve, with a strong focus on proactive risk reduction. Their advanced technology and tailored in-vehicle training programmes have been pivotal in creating a safer driving culture across HM Revenue & Customs. Coupled with their exceptional customer support, Driving Monitor has helped us uphold the highest standards of driver safety and compliance. We look forward to further strengthening this collaboration and achieving even greater improvements in risk management and road safety.
