Pothole-Related Breakdowns Hit New High…
More pothole-related breakdowns are being reported than ever, according to the latest data.
The study was published with National Pothole Day (15th January) in mind, showing that there was a 17% increase in the number of breakdowns directly attributed to potholes.
In fact, according to the study, 39% of all callouts were due to punctured tyres in the last quarter of 2024, which is higher than at any other time last higher.
The reality is that potholes and road conditions always worsen in the winter months, with freezing temperatures playing havoc.

While it’s important to stay vigilant on the road, the reality is that there are some potholes that are simply unavoidable.
It’s why the government announced £1.6 billion in funding to deal with road improvements and repairs, which should in theory see an additional seven million potholes repaired in 2025/26.
As we all know, road conditions have deteriorated in recent years and with traffic levels at an all-time high, the problem is only going to worsen.
The Pothole Partnership, an organisation campaigning for road improvements, has called on the government and local authorities to look to longer term solutions when it comes to pothole repairs.
Short-term fixes can often cause more problems in the long run if the situation is not addressed, particularly in winter with wet weather and freezing temperatures impacting conditions.
