Road Safety: Most Dangerous Day Of The Week For Drivers Revealed…
When it comes to road safety, it’s always important to have your wits about you – that goes without saying.
But a recent study of telematics data has been looking at whether or not there are days and times of the week when accidents are more likely…
And it turns out, there are:
The most likely day and time of the week for an accident to occur is at 9am on a Friday.
It might not be a surprise to any fleet operators or drivers who spend each and every week out on the road or managing fleets, but it’s an interesting study.
Why Is A Friday More Dangerous Than Other Days On The Road?
The data is based on a study of telematics data from 5,000 vehicles, so it’s worth knowing that Friday is a busy time for many fleets.
With more incidents of harsh braking, speeding, sudden turns and cornering, the conclusion is that Friday has a higher volume of ‘aggressive’ driving than any other day of the week.
As a result, accidents are more likely because of the way in which some drivers approach their journeys.
The prevailing thought is that it’s because Friday is the end of the week which means that people are tired, rushing to finish their route or their minds might be elsewhere thinking of what they need to do at the weekend.
It’s interesting to see the data because it’s something that fleets can feed into their own driver data and look for any patterns.
Awareness is a huge part of road safety and if drivers know that Friday is a day where concentration and driving standards can slip across the board from other road users, it can help them be vigilant in their own driving.
Is Winter The Most Dangerous Time To Be On The Road?
Traditionally, most people think of winter as the most dangerous time to be on the road.
After all, there are several hazards that we have to be aware of, including adverse weather conditions such as snow, heavy rain and ice.
Add that to frozen windscreens, poor visibility and increased braking distances and it’s definitely a time for a little bit of extra caution.
The lead up to Christmas and New Year always sees an increase in traffic density too, with fleets making Christmas deliveries and drivers visiting family throughout the month.
And higher traffic density means extra care is needed to ensure everyone stays safe on the roads. While other times of year bring their own hazards on the road, it’s true that winter requires a little bit of extra time, care and attention to stay safe.
For most drivers, that means allowing extra time to defrost windscreens, being aware of your increased stopping distance and ensuring you’re aware of your surroundings at all times.
