Road Safety Week: AI Cameras Deployed To Spot Mobile-Phone Using Drivers
Road Safety Week is in full swing and as part of it, a new report detailing how AI cameras have been deployed to spot drivers using their phones behind the wheel has been released.
It was conducted as part of a 5-week trial in Greater Manchester to see how effective the artificial intelligence tech can be at spotting drivers using their phone or not wearing their seatbelt while driving.
The technology required a combination of the AI cameras and real people monitoring to be able to effectively catch offending drivers.
In total, more than 3,200 offenders were captured by the system for either using their mobile phone while behind the wheel or not having their seatbelt fastened while driving.
With distracted driving becoming an issue that needs addressing in recent years, particularly due to mobile phone use, the government and local authorities are looking to technology for potential solutions.
Relying solely on police and authorities to spot offenders simply isn’t enough of a deterrent, especially with the reduction in police numbers in recent years.
The trial in Greater Manchester is an intriguing step in road safety and it could be the first move in the adoption of AI and other technology to improve road safety.
